I hate myself for this and wonder why I’m like this?

💡 Self-Hatred Is Anxiety Talking

You might ask: “Am I to blame? Why am I like this?”

Here’s the truth: You didn’t choose this. Nobody wakes up and says, “I’d like to overthink everything today.” Anxiety develops slowly, shaped by your environment, experiences, and sometimes just how your nervous system is wired.

Blaming yourself for anxiety is like blaming yourself for a fever. You didn’t cause it — you’re just experiencing it. And that self-hatred you feel? That’s part of the anxiety itself. Anxiety doesn’t just make you worry about the world; it turns inward, making you doubt and criticize yourself.

🌍 “Why Me?” — The Big Question

When someone is diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, the first questions are often: “Why me? Is this my fault?”

The answer: No. Not even a little bit.

Anxiety usually comes from a mix of things you didn’t choose:

  • Sensitive brain wiring: Some people are born with a nervous system that reacts more strongly.
  • Family history: Anxiety often runs in families.
  • Life stress: Trauma or chaos can train your brain to stay on high alert.

It’s not weakness. It’s not failure. It’s simply your brain’s alarm system stuck in “on” mode.

🔄 Breaking the Anxious Loop

When the loop starts, don’t fight it. Fighting only fuels more anxiety. Instead, try:

  • Noticing the loop: Say, “There goes my brain again.”
  • Grounding yourself: Take a walk, breathe fresh air, or observe the thought without judgment.
  • Reframing reassurance: Instead of chasing certainty, practice tolerating uncertainty.
  • Zooming out: Ask, “Will this matter in 5 minutes? 5 days? 5 months? 5 years?”

Most worries dissolve when you stop feeding them attention.

💪 You’re Not Weak

You might think: “Am I so weak that I can’t control my own mind?”

But the mind isn’t a machine with an on/off switch. Even monks, athletes, and therapists struggle with their thoughts. The difference is they’ve learned skills to work with their mind, not against it.

You haven’t been taught those skills yet — and that’s not weakness. That’s just where you are right now. The fact that you’re asking these questions, showing honesty and courage, proves you’re stronger than you think.

✨ Be gentle with yourself. You’re not broken. You’re human. And being human means sometimes carrying heavy things — but never alone.
